Skin boosters, explained

What injectable skin boosters are, the main types, and what to expect on the day.

Skin boosters are injectable treatments that improve the quality of the skin itself (its hydration, texture, elasticity and glow) rather than adding volume or changing your features. They are often discussed for dull or dehydrated skin, uneven texture and early fine lines.

Polynucleotide skin boosters

Polynucleotides are DNA fragments, commonly purified from salmon. Delivered through fine micro-injections across the treatment area, they aim to support the skin's natural repair processes. People often ask about them for dull or tired-looking skin, rough texture, enlarged pores and early fine lines. A course of around three sessions, a few weeks apart, is typical.

Hyaluronic acid skin boosters

Hyaluronic acid is a substance found naturally in the skin. Some skin boosters use a highly concentrated form, injected at a few points on each side of the face, where it spreads gently beneath the skin. Others use a lighter form delivered through many fine micro-injections. Both are used to improve hydration and skin quality, usually over two or three sessions about four weeks apart, and can also be used on the neck.

Other options for skin quality

Skin boosters are only one approach. Depending on what you would like to improve, our doctor may also discuss laser toning, chemical peels, medical facials or changes to your daily skincare.

Which option is right for me?

It depends on your skin and what you would like to improve, and an injectable may not be needed at all. At your consultation, our doctor will assess your skin and explain the suitable options, with their benefits and risks.

What to expect on the day

  • A numbing cream may be applied first to keep you comfortable.
  • The injections themselves take only a short time; allow a little extra time for preparation.
  • Small bumps or redness at the injection points are expected and usually settle quickly.
  • You will receive aftercare advice, which typically includes avoiding makeup, saunas and strenuous exercise for a short period.

Possible risks

Redness, swelling, bruising, itching and tenderness at the injection points can occur and usually settle within a few days. Less commonly, injections can lead to infection, an allergic reaction or longer-lasting lumps. Please tell your doctor about any allergies, including to fish, any infection in the area, the medicines you take, and if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Good to knowResults build gradually as the skin responds, so changes are usually seen over the weeks after a course is completed. Results vary between individuals.
